As a core feature of Star Wars : The Old Republic, companions will fight at your side, provide commentary, and can even be sent on side missions to assist in gathering and crafting new gear. As a fighting escort, any companion can be set to fill the role of healer, tank, or damage. While exploring the galaxy they can also be sent away to sell all the junk you have acquired, freeing up bag space without having to travel back to a town yourself. Most entertaining of all is each companion has their own story. As you get to know them better some will have the option to romance, or maybe you want to keep them your slave. The choice is yours.

Acquiring

You will get Companions and Followers to join you in any number of ways. While playing the original class storylines each class will obtain five unique companions. Each companion has their own personality and will provide information at key points during their gameplay. A droid companion is acquired when the class ship is located. There are more companions that will join the crew and continue the story in Knights of the Fallen Empire. Then even more companions can be acquired by completing achievements, or purchased through the cartel market. Check the link below to expand a list of companions. Click on any companion to learn how to recruit the companion you are looking for.

Selecting and Managing

Knowing what Companions and Followers you have and their current status is very important. Bioware built an interface special for keeping track of all the different aspects of your Companions. Known as the Companions and Contacts window (Press N to open) this interface will let you manage most aspects of your assembled team.

Companions and Contacts

Companions and Contacts Window

Below is each option in the Companions and Contacts interface window.

Companion IconLocated in the left pane of the window is a list of Companions. The first item in the list is a Companion Icon, giving you a small image of what each of them look like.
Companion NameNext to each icon is the Companion Name.
Companion Roll IconFollowing the name is the Roll Icon. This displays the current roll of each companion. The three options are Healer, Tank, or Damage. This roll only effects the companion while they are active fighting at your side.
Companion InfluenceNext is the current Rank and percentage of Influence remaining to reach the next rank. This effects the companion in both fighting skill and when sent on missions. More details on this in the next section.
Summon Companion buttonLast in line is a Summon Companion button. This will call the companion to fight at your side. (Will not work in an operation, on your ship, or if you are in a group of max size)
Sell Trash Items buttonIf the companion is already summoned the Summon Companion button is replaced with a Sell Trash Items button. This will send the companion away for a short time to sell any items in your bags considered trash and exchanges them for credits.
Set RollIn the top right you can set the selected companions Roll. The three options are Healer, Tank, or Damage. You can set the roll of any companion at any time from this interface, however, this only effects the companion while they are active fighting at your side.
BioLocated on the right side is a Bio of the selected companion. This has a short dicription and history of your followers.
InteractionsUnder the Bio is a list of all Interactions you have had with the selected companion. Items will not appear here until much later in your story with Knights of the Fallen Empire.
InteractionsOn the far right side of the window is a Minimize Button. This will hide the right side of the window and make the Companions and Contacts interface take up much less of your screen.

Influence and Rank

As you play and level up all of your companions will level up with you. More importantly, you do not have to keep upgrading their armor, weapons, or gear. They will always maintain the same fighting, healing or tanking strength suited for your current level. This make it much easier to pick the companion you want and not forced to play the one that is best geared. Most companion can still wear armor but this is purely cosmetic and only effects how they look. More information on customizing and dressing your companions in the next section below. While your companion will gain power and strength with you as you level automatically, there is a way to add a small bonus to their stats. Rank and Influence.

As you adventure with your companion they you will gain influence. Much like leveling, once they earn enough influence they will gain a new rank. Each influence rank will give the following bonuses to that companion.

  • +50 Presence
  • +1.5% time efficiency for crew skill tasks
  • +0.5% critical rate for crew skill tasks
The max rank a companion can have is 50. At that rank they will have 2500 presence, 75% time efficiency for crew skill tasks, and 25% critical rate for crew skill tasks. In addition to doing activities with your companion to increase their influence there are also items in the game you can consume that will boost your current active companion's influence. These are known as companion gifts. There is a large amount of different types and ranks of companion gifts and not all companions will like the same type. To make it even more confusing, once your companion gets to a certain rank the lower rank companion gifts become less effective. Visit our guide for each companion for a chart of companion gifts best suited for that companion. A list of companions is in the section above.
